(This article was mirrored from Twitter. ) I bought a set of Rebocap trackers. They're pretty cheap; ~$210 US for a set of 15! I've been pretty pleased with the tracking quality too. They're IMU-based trackers, like SlimeVR. So far, everyone I've spoke to has been like "I've never heard of these!"...
So far, I like them quite a lot. Unlike the Vive and Tundra trackers I have, I haven't had any issues getting them picked up and recognized in SteamVR, no issues with trackers flying off or appearing a metre to the left, no problems charging them, and no occlusion issues...
The tracking quality is pretty great. Since I've never used Slimes, so I can't compare to them. While I'm standing up, the trackers work perfectly. It drifts a little as I shuffle around, but they seem to have an auto-calibration system; step in place a few times and it's fixed.
As I understand it, IMU-based trackers determine their position by using the rotational difference between your bones. Rebocap also uses magnetic sensors to track movement, although this is easily influenced by anything metal in the environment. And some black-box AI thing on top.
When sitting or lying down, sometimes my legs get a bit messed up. You can see my legs are together here, but sometimes they'd just spread out until I stood up and moved around, which is weird. I think it might be an automatic calibration thing as well.
The biggest problem I've ran into so far seem to be that they aren't fully compatible with the PSVR2. If my headset loses tracking, I get teleported into the distance, which freaks VRC out. Some of the driver features don't work, like replacing controller tracking with Rebo's.
There's also a concern that the software is proprietary. It is Windows-only and requires an internet connection to boot. Since I've never managed to get SteamVR to work without an internet connection, I can accept that. Supposedly they work on Linux through WINE as well.
In conclusion, Rebocap is cheap and seem to be pretty good so far. The company announced a presumably cheaper set for VR usage with fewer trackers (6) for the future as well. Maybe it's worth checking out over the overpriced Lighthouse-based stuff for you, too?
